Serviceable Parts for End User Systems

It would be great if everything we used simply always worked and never required maintenance. However, as we know, cars need oil changes, lawn mowers require blade sharpening, and furnaces need filters replaced. Rimage systems also need maintenance, but these systems are engineered to make these activities as easy as possible for our end-users. Understanding how easy it is to perform these functions can provide confidence the next time your Rimage system needs maintenance.


Recorders (Producer/Professional/Catalyst)


Rimage quick-release recorders make the inevitable job of replacing a recorder an easy process. Since you will be plugging in a power cable, it is important to turn the system off before you start, then remove the recorder. At the front of the tray on Rimage recorders, there are two plastic tabs. Squeeze them towards each other and pull straight out. The recorders are often snug to keep them aligned for reliable picking. Pull the recorder out until the back is visible. Depending on your Rimage system, you will find one combined cable, or separate power and SATA cables. Unplug them both from the recorder you’re removing, plug them into the new recorder and simply slide the recorder back into the Rimage system. Push firmly until the locks engage, and you’re finished! When the system powers up, your new recorder is ready for use with no additional work.


Hard Drives (All embedded systems)


Replacing a hard drive is nearly as simple as a recorder. This is helpful, as you may want to do this for other reasons than a faulty hard drive. If you need to exchange your Rimage system during a Rapid Exchange service event, swapping your hard drives may allow you to get up and running immediately. By swapping your existing hard drives into the replacement system, any software, user information, custom settings or other configuration is moved with them, avoiding wasting time setting everything back up.

As with recorders, please power off the Rimage system prior to interacting with the hard drives. On older Rimage systems, you will find the hard drive bay in the back of the system. There’s typically an access panel with a thumb screw to open it. The hard drives have plastic tabs similar to the recorders and operate in the same way. Squeeze them together and pull the drive out. Putting them back in works the same, making sure you press firmly enough for the locks to engage.


HINT: pay attention to the orientation of the drive when you remove it, so that you can easily orient it when you put it back in


On new Rimage systems like the Rimage Catalyst series, you will find the hard drives to be front accessible along the bottom of the system. Removing and installing the drives work the same, but with even easier access and no panels to remove.




With Rimage Producer or Catalyst systems, the printer is a separate component. This allows it to be removed for service or even to change ribbon without needing to do anything with the rest of the Rimage system. On all systems with separate printers, there are no screws or fasteners holding the printer in place, only gravity. Power off the Rimage system and then disconnect the three cables that connect to the printer: USB, serial, as well as power. Then, lift the printer straight up about an inch to make sure the feet clear the alignment plate on the system and the printer is clear. When placing the printer onto the system, line the feet up with spaces in the alignment plate. This prevents you from needing to do any alignment in most cases. Plug the cables back in and you’re ready to go once the system boots up. The software automatically configures the printer drivers for you on startup.


Grippers/Pickers (Producer/Professional/Catalyst)


The last major component designed for end-user replacement is the gripper, otherwise known as the picker. Underneath the gripper at the end furthest away from the shaft, there is a single screw securing the gripper in place. On the other end of the gripper, next to the shaft and behind the gripper housing, are flex cables that power and control the gripper. Disconnect these before removing the screw. Once the screw is removed, the gripper can be removed by moving it down and away from the shaft. When replacing the gripper, line the two prongs on the back of the gripper up with the slots in the housing. Place the screw back in, reconnect the cables, and boot the system back up.


When replacing the gripper, you may need to perform other procedures like alignment or a calibration diagnostic. While those instructions go beyond this document, Rimage Support has guides for these processes and can provide assistance.
